Links and Preparatory Material

Please have a look at the EU information on the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) and reflect how the EU operations (in particular in Africa) are justified ethically, politically and strategically. Please review the different material (speeches, documents, videos, podcasts etc.) under the “justification” aspect.

Different “justification narratives” are a starting point to discuss the operations’ legitimacy. The discussion rounds will refer to the questions when and by which means is it legitimate to intervene and under which circumstances it is legitimate not to intervene.

Another important aspect of the discussion will be the political, moral and also strategic tensions between “interventions” and “sovereignty of states” under international law. Barack Obama’s speech upon receiving the Nobel Peace Prize develops some basic thoughts on this topic, which will also be helpful for you to prepare for the discussion.
